Maryland - Prisons To Offer Kosher Food

Maryland - Governor Robert Erlich has approved a plan to serve kosher food in the state’s prisons to Jewish inmates requesting it. About 200 of the state’s 26,000 prisoners are Jewish.

The decision was made even though a federal judge last year ruled that the state did not have an obligation to serve kosher food, finding that the vegetarian diet that was available was a sufficient accommodation.
